shedding light on manawatu gorge railway tunnels

the challenge

In the Manawatu Gorge, existing height clearances through three of the railway tunnels are too low to allow for the use of 2.9 m high containers on the preferred rolling stock.  A range of clearance options were assessed and day lighting (removing the tunnels to create an open cutting) was recommended as the best practicable solution.

our role

Management of the consenting (RMA) phase, involving:
  • A discharge permit application to discharge stormwater to land and into the Manawatu River
  • A land use consent application for the Tunnel 5 earthworks and vegetation clearance
  • A certificate of compliance application for the Tunnel 5 earthworks and vegetation clearance
  • A certificate of compliance application for Tunnels 3 and 4 earthworks and vegetation clearance
  • A designation alteration of the rail corridor passing through Tunnels 3, 4 and 5
  • An outline plan for works on and above Tunnels 3, 4 and 5 in the designated corridor
